William Carlton Mcclure

William Carlton "Pokey" McClure, 78, of Buchanan, passed on March 8, 2014 peacefully at home. Born in Lynchburg, Va. on May 6, 1935, Pokey was the only child of the now deceased William C. Sr. and Effie Downey McClure. Pokey retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation as the Maintenance Superintendant for the Buchanan area. He attended Virginia Episcopal School for three years where he excelled in baseball, graduated Fishburn Military school, and attended Hampden Sydney College where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity initiated on 19 Oct 1959. Pokey was a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge 233 AF&AM, Past Governor of the Glasgow Moose Lodge, and an accomplished hunter attaining the Turkey Grand Slam and many other trophies the last of which was a 10 point Whitetail. Leaving to cherish his memory is his wife of 30 years, Jean Ware McClure; daughter and son-in-law, Whitney and Gary Moore of Roanoke; step-son and wife, J.S. III and Sherry Rucker of Hardy; step-son, Eric Garland Metz and Penny Gray of Buchanan; grandchildren, Logan Moore and Aaron Moore; step-grandchildren, J.S. Rucker IV, Bridget Rucker, Sean Hash, Christopher Hash, Hunter Metz, Nikki Metz and Whitney Gray; special cousin, Volney McClure of Glasgow; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Richard and Paige Ware of Fincastle, Virginia Ware of Buchanan, Roger and Patricia Caron of Massachusetts; and many beloved nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Buchanan Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 344 Buchanan. The family will receive guests at the Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Highway, Buchanan on Monday, March 10, 2014 from 5 to 8 pm. Pokey's funeral service will be held at 11:30 am, Tuesday, March 11, 2014 in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with Pastor Randy L. Martin officiating. Interment will follow in at Fairview Cemetery~Buchanan.
