Wesley "Nubbin" Edward Taylor, 85, of Buchanan, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2016. He was born September 25, 1930 to Leo and Della Campbell Taylor. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Eva Mae "Sallie" Harris. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Kenneth Hyden; granddaughter, Jaylen Hyden; sister, Betty Welch; brother and sister-in-law, John Henry and Becky Taylor; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; special friend, Madeline Austin; mother of his daughter and former spouse, Brenda Smith; and many friends, including the Stop In Coffee Group, all of whom will remember him with love and laughter! Nubbin served in the US Army from 1952-1954. Upon his return home from military duty, he began working with the Harlow brothers, Herman and Fred. He continued in their heating and plumbing business for many years. In 1980, Nubbin started working for the Town of Buchanan Water Maintenance Dept., from which he retired in 2008. He first joined the Buchanan Volunteer Fire Dept. in the mid 1960s, becoming a Life Member at his 30th year. He remained an active firefighter, served in the BVFD color guard, and was a valuable volunteer at the Buchanan Firemans Carnival for over 50 years. This milestone was recognized by the Fire Dept. several years ago during Carnival Week! Nubbin's life calling seemed to be helping others, which kept him busy at all hours of the day and night. Whether on the job, or just to help out someone in need after hours, he enjoyed his work every day. Even after "retirement", whenever there was a question or a problem, someone would always say, "Let's ask Nubbin, he will know", and he usually did have the answer. He was a walking history book, remembering every tiny detail regarding any topic. He loved to tell his stories! As family, we have sat and listened and laughed for hours, as he recalled many of his antics. Nubbin was a wonderful man, devoted friend, and great father. He was so caring and giving to others, many times giving more than he had. But he would not have done any less for anyone. He was a humble and thoughtful man who meant the world to his family, and his family meant everything to him. Nubbin always had the perfect response to this question, "Nubbin, how are you today?" Perfect answer from him…."I feel like a king that's never been crowned." Yes Nubbin Taylor, you are a King, and you now have your perfect crown! Finally, at rest and at peace, he will always be living strong and proud in our hearts. Memorial Services will be held at 3pm with visitation at 2pm Friday, March 11, 2016 in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home, which will feature a special memorial by the Buchanan Volunteer Fire Department. Services will be officiated by Elder Cleatus Newcomb. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Botetourt Funeral Home.
