Stuart Dale Carter 01.05.1940 ~ 10.26.2018 After a brief struggle with cancer, Dale Carter passed away on Friday, October 26, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stuart B. and Mary S. Carter; wife of 55 years, Gloria H Carter; in-laws James E. and Lily Mae Hodge. He is survived by his sons Stuart James (Jimmy) Carter of Buchanan VA, and Charles Dale Carter, his wife Rebecca H Carter, and granddaughter, Olivia G Carter of Jamestown NC; sister, Shelley Carter Page; husband, Harry L Page, II, of Nashville, TN; niece and nephew, Sheridan Page-Fatzinger and H Lee Page III, also of Nashville, TN; and special friend, Colleen Myrick of Roswell, GA. Dale was a graduate of Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, VA, attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, and graduated from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. He resettled in his hometown of Buchanan in 1970, where he raised his family and enjoyed a long teaching career, from which he was forced to retire after a severe car accident in September of 1994. Dale Carter was many things in his life; Devoted husband of 55 years to wife Gloria, and father to Jimmy and Dale. Retired business teacher and activities bus driver from James River High School, long-time member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Long-time member and past president of Buchanan Rotary Club; and a firm believer in Rotary International's motto: "Service Above Self". A few of the many projects he was involved in included; Purchased and restored the Buchanan Theatre, after its closure of 17 years, volunteered at the annual 4th of July Carnival on behalf of the Volunteer Fire Dept & Rescue Squad, hauled Arbor Day trees for the town's Arbor Day celebrations, helped with the town's luminaries project every Christmas Eve, helped maintain the grounds at the Buchanan Community House. As much as he might dislike the comparison, he really did rival his father in many ways. His generosity, community spirit, and self-sacrifice stand on their own as a memorial to a life well-lived and a life well-worth remembering, as a chapter in the history of southwestern Virginia. He will be missed by some, remembered by many, and equaled by very few... Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, November 21, 2018 in Trinity Episcopal Church, Buchanan with Rev.
