Stephen A. Anderson, known affectionately to many as Shoe Man, passed away Saturday, August 29. Steve is predeceased by his mother and father, Gladys and Virgil Anderson; three children, April Lorraine, Stephen Anthony Jr., and Stephanie Ann; and his cousin, who was like a brother, Barry Brickey. He is survived by his daughter, Sarah Anderson; cousin, Carolyn Boley; and many friends, because Steve was a man who never met a stranger. Steve was a well-known shoe salesman in Roanoke for many years at Propst Childress. Later, he turned his love of driving and cars into a career as a cab driver for Liberty Cab. With a wicked sense of humor and flair for storytelling, Steve left a lasting impression on every person he met. He could often be found reading and enjoying a cup of black coffee at Barnes & Noble, where he was a fixture. He passed on his love of old Westerns, the music of the Eagles, old cars and Sherlock Holmes mysteries to his daughter, who apologizes for how many times he might have told you about how smart and charming she is. He was, after all, prone to exaggerate for a better story. A private graveside service will be held Friday, September 4 at Sherwood Memorial at 11 a.m. for close friends and family. The family requests no flowers be sent. Instead, please buy a copy of your favorite book and gift it to someone in your life, so they can share your favorite story with you.
