Ruth Sprinkle Camper

Ruth Virginia Sprinkle Camper, 92, formerly of Buchanan, was carried by angels to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Sunday, October 7, 2012. Since 2003, she has been a resident at Runk & Pratt Residential Care facilities, spending the last eight years at their Memory Care facility in Forest, VA. Ruth was born June 21, 1920, the daughter of the late Clarence Henry Sprinkle and Laura Cathryn Bolton Sprinkle. She was the wife of the late Jimmie Rudolph Camper, to whom she was married for 55 years. She leaves to cherish her memory: a son, Rhudy Camper, Forest; a niece, Carole Allred and husband, Gene, Falls Church; and a nephew, C. Richard "Dickie" Sprinkle II and wife Janice, Buchanan. Ruth grew up in Fincastle, living at the family home "Rose Hill." Soon after graduation from Fincastle High School in 1939, she moved to Buchanan. After marriage, she joined Mill Creek Baptist Church and began a lifelong membership there. During her time at Runk and Pratt, Ruth was in the Watchcare program of Beulah Baptist Church in Lynchburg, VA. Ruth was retired from the Botetourt County School System, working in the Buchanan Elementary School cafeteria. For many years, she served as the manager. She was a terrific cook, making her daytime work at BES the perfect job. Away from school, she graciously provided items for church socials, community fundraisers, or neighbors. However, her family was the real beneficiary of her kitchen talents. A favorite pastime of Ruth's was maintaining a beautiful array of flowers. From roses to peonies to irises, they all graced her home on Boyd Street and were the subject of many compliments over the years. Ruth loved watching the Virginia Tech Hokies play football, but she enjoyed sports in general, starting when she played basketball for Fincastle High School. She also played for a Fincastle team in Roanoke city league games held in the City Market Building gym. Her greatest loves, however, were her church and her family. Ruth's life was one of solid Christian living, and providing a home that nurtured those beliefs is a legacy she would be proud of. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 10, 2012, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary of Mill Creek Baptist Church, 11475 Lee Highway, Fincastle, VA, with Rev. Dr. J. Randolph Daniels and Rev. Dr. Dennis Hollandsworth officiating. Interment will follow in Mill Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends during 2:00-3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, also in the Sanctuary of Mill Creek Baptist Church. Sincere appreciation is expressed to the staff at Runk and Pratt for care provided to Ruth while a resident at their Lynchburg and Forest facilities and to neighbors during her last years at the residence on Boyd Street.
