Russell D. ("Buddy") Vines, 89, of Buchanan, Va., passed away on July 2, 2016. Buddy was born on December 21, 1926, in Roanoke, VA, and raised in Lithia, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Vines and Grace Highfill Vines; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Geraldine Vines; sister, Nancy Vines Wirt; sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth ("Libby") and Lyndle ("Nig") Philpott; sister and brother-in-law, Annie and Jack Garland; and brother-in-law, Phil Mallane. Buddy served in the Pacific during World War II as a Navy seaman first-class aboard LST-1026. After the war he worked at James Lees and Sons in Glasgow, Virginia for 17½ years before driving for Red Line Trucking Company and retiring from Roadway Express in 1989. He was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Buchanan, Va., where he served as an usher for many years, and greatly enjoyed meeting with the men's group at the North Star Restaurant, his favorite meeting place with family and friends. He also served as trustee of Fairview Cemetery. Buddy was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees and sportsman in his own right enjoying hunting, fishing, tennis and golf. Hardly a game was played at James River High School that he didn't attend. Some of his best days were spent bear hunting with his dear friend Bobby Falls. Buddy and his brother Lawrence spent countless summers together in the garden babying tomato plants, repairing lawn mowers, and enjoying each other's company. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of 66 years, Cindy Vines; daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Ray Sink; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Vickie Vines; brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Eva Vines; sister, Vera Vines Mallane; grandsons, Wade T. Anderson and wife, Stephanie; Ryan C. Anderson and wife, Rachel; granddaughters, Amber Vines Wilke and husband, Jeff; Heather Vines Wallace and husband, Jay; Tina Ratcliffe and husband, Jeff; Christy Sink and fiancé, Ray Kaelin. He is also survived by adoring great-grandchildren, Madeleine and Carter Anderson, Ian and Owen Anderson, Ava and Russell Wilke, Nicholas, Hunter, and Mikaela Wallace, Phillip Reid and McKenzie Moore, and Jenna and Will Ratcliffe, as well as numerous dear nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at Botetourt Funeral Home. There will be a funeral service at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Doug Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Buchanan, Va. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations in his honor to the Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 206, Buchanan, Va. 24066.
