Richard Arlen Chapman

August 24, 1930 — July 9, 2017

Richard Arlen Chapman, 86, of Roanoke, passed away on 07/09 of complications from kidney cancer. Born in Buchanan, VA in 1930 to the late Buchanan Police Chief, Frank L. Chapman and Bertha Stinnett Chapman. Richard was a graduate of Buchanan High School. Preceding in death was his wife, Blanche Gallimore Chapman. Surviving are his son, Richard Arlen Chapman Jr. (Rick); sister, Gladys Bayer of Fredericksburg; nieces, Judy Wobbrock of Minneapolis MN; Wanda Thiem of Sun City West, AZ; nephews, Marc Tinnell of The Woodlands, TX; John and James Chapman of Harleysville, PA; and George Marshall Bayer of Richmond. (Dick) was an early pioneer as a television technician in the Roanoke Valley starting in 1950, operating his service department at H.R. Johnson Co. in Salem for close to 50 years. He also was an early member of the Roanoke Valley Amateur Radio Club with his call letters, K4WVQ. There was nothing electrical he could not fix. Dick loved fishing on the James River and Craigs Creek with his son, Rick and friends, Alvis Perdue and Larry Shelton. He will be missed by all who knew him. Memorial services will be held at 11 am Tuesday, July 18, 2017 in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Hwy, Buchanan, 540-254-3000.
