Raye Markham Rice

Raye Rebecca Markham Rice, 85, of Buchanan, passed away Friday, September 4, 2015, at her home after a short battle with cancer. Raye was a longtime member of the Buchanan Presbyterian Church. She was predeceased by her parents, Raymond Clarence Markham and Elizabeth Dewey Markham; her first husband, Calvin M. Rice; her second husband, Jack Abercrombie; her sisters, Elizabeth Wright and Wilma Markham, her brother, Jackie L. Markham. Raye and worked and retired from Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She also worked for the Peaks of Otter Restaurant and Lodge for several years. Raye was a loyal friend of Bill Wilson for 44 years. She is survived by a daughter, Cindy (Charles) Downs; son, Mark (Joanne) Rice; grandsons, Kevin (Rachel) Downs, Brent (Vicki) Watts; special sister-in-law, Madeline "Bugs" Markham; brother, Floyd (Barbara) Markham; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family will like to recognize the wonderful care and compassion that she received from Dr. Robert Glenney of Carilion Clinic of Buchanan, also the exceptional care that she received from the Carilion Hospice Team of Amy, Regina, Ben, Debbie, Robin, and Samantha. Their loving care given to Raye in her final days was a huge comfort to her and her family as she ended her journey in life. Funeral Services will be held 11 am, Saturday September 12, 2015 in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with Pastors Marina Gopadze and Jay Robinette officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm Friday, September 11, 2015 at Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Highway, Buchanan. 540-254-3000.
