Paxton Thurman Montgomery

September 22, 1931 — October 8, 2016

On October 8, 2016, while surrounded by his family, angels carried Paxton T. Montgomery, Jr to his heavenly home to be reunited with his family and friends. Paxton was born September 22, 1931, in Buchanan, VA to Paxton T. & Ella Kelsey Montgomery. He graduated from Buchanan High School in 1949 and attended Virginia Tech. After one term at Tech he joined the military. While serving as an MP with the Air Force he met and married Gwyneth M. Stevens of Newmarket England. In 1954 he was honorably discharged and returned to Botetourt. In 1966 he established Riverbend Angus Farm and a life time of memories were made along the James River. He enjoyed sitting on the porch in the early mornings watching the birds, spotting and hunting wild life and enjoying the beautiful surroundings. He loved to farm, garden, raise Black Angus cattle and rabbits. He was at peace on the farm. He was employed by Rubatex and Groendyk Manufacturing for over 35 years. He was an active member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and was the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of VA 1990-1991. He was predeceased by his parents, Paxton T. Montgomery, Sr and Ella Kelsey Montgomery, two brothers, David and Harry Montgomery. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years, Gwen Montgomery and one daughter, Jane (Dave) and sons David (Sandra), Pete (Susan), Leonard (Dawn), Lee (Julie) and honorary "adopted son" Jeff Wray (Pat); twelve grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; brother, Charles Montgomery and sisters, Mary Bryant, Betty May, Doris Doss, Margaret Nathe, Grace Alexander and Sara Britt. Service will be held Friday, October 14, at 10:30 am at the Chapel of the Botetourt Funeral Home with internment to follow at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 13, 2016 between 4-7pm at Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Highway, Buchanan In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Buchanan Food Pantry.
