Pauline Thelma Sprinkle, formerly residing at 175 15th Street, Buchanan, and for the last six years at Carrington Place in Daleville, passed away at Carrington Place on the evening of Sunday, January 21. Pauline, 95, was born the daughter of Denver Roscoe Robbins and Lola Ely Robbins on April 23, 1922, in the Crab Orchard community near Keokee, Virginia in Southwest Virginia. She grew up during the Depression in the coal mining community of Monarch, Virginia, attended school in nearby St. Charles and attended Hiwassee College in Madisonville, Tennessee for one year after graduation from St. Charles High School. Pauline married Charles Allen Sprinkle of Bonny Blue, Virginia in 1942 and traveled with him to various Army bases in the United States prior to his assignment overseas as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II. At the end of World War II Pauline and Charles moved to Emory, Virginia where Charles attended Emory and Henry College on the GI Bill. They subsequently moved to Botetourt County where Charles was an administrator at Colonial Elementary and High School at Blue Ridge, at Buchanan Elementary and High School and at James River High School. Pauline and Charles had four children: Charles Allen Sprinkle, Jr.; Saundra Carol Sprinkle; Linda Sue Sprinkle and Robert Stephan Sprinkle. Pauline was a devoted wife and mother. Throughout the years Pauline supported her husband and provided for her family as an avid and productive gardener and as an extraordinary cook and housekeeper. She was an accomplished seamstress and also filled many hours and adorned many a sofa and bed with beautiful crochet work. With the assistance of Charles, Pauline was an accomplished trainer of bird dogs (setters and pointers) and alongside Charles, she became a very successful turkey hunter and caller. Pauline loved to work outside and created extraordinarily beautiful flower gardens wherever she lived. Pauline was a member of the Buchanan Presbyterian Church. Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, by her only sibling, Edith Mary Lewis, and in 2000 by her husband, Charles. Pauline and Charles had been married for fifty-eight years. Despite the dementia, which became more and more a part of her existence in the last decades of her life, Pauline spent the last six years of her life happily and comfortably at Carrington Place in Daleville. The entire Carrington Place staff admirably cared for Pauline, but special thanks go to Rhonda Gobbler, to Jason Parr, to Suzie Demosthene, and particularly to Elizabeth (Lovey) Peters. Special thanks go, also, to Pauline's beloved neighbor and friend in Buchanan, Liz Peery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice in Pauline's name. A memorial graveside service will be held at a later date. Arrangements by the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home 540-254-3000.
