Kenneth Keith Kern, 79, of Botetourt County, passed away quietly with his family by his side on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 after a short illness. One of thirteen children, Keith was born on June 13, 1933 to the late Matthew and Ethel Kern. He was employed by Lone Star Cement Company in Botetourt County where he retired after 33 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Matthew Kern, Jr. and Jimmy Kern; six sisters Agnus Showalter, Francis Duff, Mary Kidd, Josephine Kern, Pricilla Redd, and Una Mae Kern. He leaves behind his loving and dedicated wife of 60 years, Eunice; five children and their spouses, who will miss him dearly, Debbie and Greg Stull of Eagle Rock; Eddie and Glenna Kern of Covington; Bobby and Rhonda Kern of Buchanan; Kelly Hines and fiancée, Richard Kessler of Salem; and Karen and Gary Guilliams of Troutville; grandchildren; Nicholas Kern (Dana), Korey Hines, Renee Favaro (Josh), Colin Guilliams, and Nathan Kern; great-grandchildren, Brian and Kowean Kern, whom he adored; brothers, Connie Kern (Jo Marilyn) and Gary Kern; sisters, Madeline "Happy" Wickline and Elsie Bradley; and many other family members and friends. The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the Carilion Clinic Hospice Team. They would especially like to thank Nurse Kitty Powers for the excellent and compassionate care she provided during dad's illness. They would also like to express their sincere thanks to neighbors and friends, Guy and Doris Caldwell for all their kindness and help. Graveside services will be held at Trinity Cemetery 11 am, Friday, January 11, 2013 with the Rev. Robert A. McRae officiating. There will be no visitation and in lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial contribution to Carilion Clinic Hospice, Roanoke, VA 540-224-4753.
