Judith Mundy Thompson

October 26, 1938 — February 25, 2022

Judith Mundy Thompson, forever 29, passed away on Friday, February 25, 2022 at her home with family by her side and became whole again. Judy and her twin brother, Jerry, were born October 26, 1938 in Clifton Forge, Virginia to the late Ashby Frederick, Sr. and Blanch Adams Mundy. She grew up with seven siblings in Springwood along the banks of the James River and was surrounded by many aunts, uncles, and cousins throughout her childhood. Mama always said, “We may not have been a rich family but we never thought we were poor”. Judy was a 1957 graduate of Buchanan High School. She met and married Wayne Thompson in 1959 and had 3 children together. Wayne and Judy would go on to own and operate several successful businesses in the Buchanan area. Starting with Thompson Excavating; Jim Walter Homes drywall subcontracting; Smokey’s Home Builders; Thompson Building Supply; Buchanan Building Supply, Big Daddy’s Restaurant, the Buchanan Theatre, along with many other successful enterprises over the years. Judy retired from the business world in 2007. She loved spending time in her many flower gardens, always on the hunt for unusual perennial flowers. She greatly enjoyed the several times a week card nights with her brothers and sisters, who lovingly called her the Queen “B” of cards. One had to have a tough skin to play with this group; they played to win. She participated in league bowling, loved bingo, OBX trips with her siblings, enjoyed gospel music, road trips to Charles Town, jigsaw puzzles and word puzzles of all kinds, could play a mean game of Scrabble, computer word/match games and most definitely spoiling her two cats. But of above all, her favorite pastime was collecting Barbie Dolls. Judy was predeceased by her parents, Ashby Frederick, Sr. and Blanch Adams Mundy; her husband of 41 years Wayne Lee Thompson. Brothers, Claude “Pete” Mundy and Ashby “Popeye” Mundy; sister, Ruby Mundy Hayth. Judy is survived by her three children; Deborah (JC) Broughman; William (Karen) Thompson, and Jennifer (Todd) Austin. Five greatly loved grandchildren; Amanda (John) Baizley, Allen (Meredith) Thompson, Derek Thompson, Nathan (Katie) Broughman, Phillip Wayne Broughman (fiancé Rachel Parker). Four precious great-grandchildren; Isabela Baizley, Graham Thompson, Liam Thompson, Laura Leigh Broughman. Two step- grandchildren Carly Toler and Ethan Austin. Brothers and sisters, Jerry (Barbara) Mundy, Louis (Frances) Mundy, Linda Alexander, and Patricia (Ricky) Williams. Sister-in-law Grace Mundy. Brothers-in law; Tommy (Loretta) Thompson; Jimmy (Sheila) Thompson; Bobby (Susan) Thompson. Very special cousins Sharon Parker and Diana Camper. And many, many Mundy relatives. Judy’s family would like to extend a special thank you to her wonderful caregivers over the past year. With their help and support, Judy received excellent care and was able to stay comfortably in her home; Emily Walker, Rachel Parker, Good Samaritan Hospice (Sarah, Debra, Sierra, Anita). An extra special thank you and much love to Pamela Welch who devotedly cared for Mama during the progression of her illness. We could not have done this without you, Pam. Thank you. Dementia is a cruel thief and has taught us not to take anything for granted. Live for today because tomorrow is not promised. We love you Mama and will miss you always. Judy loved flowers and they would be appreciated. We know Mama would love a donation be made in her memory to Good Samaritan Hospice, the American Cancer Association or the American Heart Association or a charity close to your heart. But we know she would have especially loved a simple random act of kindness to another person be made with her in your thoughts. The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 1, 2022 from 5 to 8 pm at Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Highway, Buchanan, Va. Interment will be private.
