John "Jack" Robert Wineman

January 24, 1924 — November 9, 2017

Born January 24, 1924, John R. (Jack) Wineman died November 9, 2017, surrounded by family at his beloved Arch Mill Farm in rural southwestern Virginia. He was 93. Jack grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, and attended Perry High School where he met his future wife, the former Jessie Stevens, in the 10th grade. His attendance at Westminster College, New Wilmington PA was interrupted by World War II, in which Jack served as a B-24 bomber pilot. Based in southern Italy, he flew 35 missions including the daring and dangerous raids on the Ploiesti Oil fields and was awarded a Purple Heart. Following the war, Jack married Jessie and completed his business degree at the University of Pittsburgh in 1948. Jack and Jessie shared a 66 year-long love affair that produced 5 children as his career in Human Resources with Gulf Oil and later Chevron led him to assignments in the US, Europe, Asia and South America. In 1979 Jack accepted his final assignment, to Angola, west Africa, and the family moved to Arch Mill Farm, anticipating his retirement. Retirement was busy for Jack, who taught as an adjunct professor in Human Resources at two community colleges, worked for the Commonwealth of Virginia consulting on compensation design, and took-in aged hunter jumpers when they could no longer compete for college equestrian teams. One of Jack's most satisfying accomplishments was serving as the Buchanan representative to the Botetourt County Library Board of Trustees from 2006 to 2011. During this time, he served as the Chairman of the Planning Committee for a new public library for the under-served community of Eagle Rock, VA, which opened in 2010. Jack Wineman was predeceased by his oldest son, John R. Wineman III, in 1991, and his beloved wife, Jessie in 2012. He is survived by a brother, Harry (Lovella) of Mesquite, NV; daughter, Christine Bennett (David) of Pittsburgh, PA; sons, Jeff (Marilyn) of Santa Ana, CA, and Mark of Pittsburgh, PA; daughter, Melissa Zimmerman (Pete Ippolito) of Fincastle, VA; and 5 grandchildren: Stewart Bennett, John Bennett (Victoria), Hallie Bennett, Logan Zimmerman Cashman (Mike), and Madison Zimmerman. The family would like to recognize with affection and gratitude the caring attentions of Joyce, Joe, and Kayla Lugar to Jack in the years following Jessie's passing, and especially in his last days. A private service of remembrance will be conducted at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to The League for Animal Protection, Fincastle, VA, the Eagle Rock Public Library, Eagle Rock, VA, or the charity of your choice.
