Jack Lewis Garland, 92, of his beloved Buchanan, passed away Sunday, October 6, 2013. Jack was a member of the Buchanan Presbyterian Church, served during WW II in the US Army as a Staff Sergeant serving in the European and Asiatic Theatres, and retired as a manager from Lees Carpets in Glasgow. He loved baseball and basketball, and was a follower of James River High School's basketball team, and loved pets and animals of all kinds. Jack knew no strangers and would strike up a conversation with anyone. He was preceded in death by the love of his life for over 66 years, Annie Goode Garland; parents, William Eugene and Theresa Swartz Garland; and was the youngest and last of his siblings. He is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Susan Lewis Garland and Dr. Neil Boothby of Wilton, Connecticut and Nancy "Nan" Garland of Buchanan; numerous nieces and nephews; and pets, Luther and Reese. Jack's funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, October 9, 2013, in the Buchanan Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Marina Gopadze and Mr. Cleatus Newcomb officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery.
