SLOAN, Rev. Irvin Wilford Sloan Rev. Irvin Wilford Sloan, 90, of Roanoke, crossed over from this earthly life to his heavenly mansion on the hilltop Thursday morning, September 19, 2013. He was born on May 6, 1923 in Franklin County to the late Jacob Harvey and Eliza Jane Richards Sloan. He attended Bent Mountain School until the eighth grade and then worked for several farms and orchards until enlisting in the U S Army Air Corps in 1943. Irvin was stationed in England, arrived in France on D-Day+3, and served on bases in France, Germany, and Belgium as a cook and baker. Coming home aboard a troop ship in January 1946, he married his sweetheart, Edna Lee Logan on January 24th, 1946 in Roanoke. He worked for Clover Creamery in the plant, Henry Aker Painting, Clover Creamery as a route salesman, Standard Coffee, Ideal Laundry, and Botetourt Funeral Homes. He was saved in Fellowship Baptist Church in Roanoke in 1953, after his young daughter Joyce's insistence over going to Sunday School. He was called into the ministry in 1962 and soon was asked by a new congregation to form Good News Baptist Church, which he led until his retirement in 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents Jacob and Eliza; sister, Gladys; brothers, Edd, Charlie, Lester, and Paul; nephew, Harvey; and nieces, Gladys and Sylvia; He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Edna Lee Logan Sloan; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Mike Wingfield of Boones Mill; son and daughter-in-law, I. Ray and Bobbi Hartley Sloan of Buchanan; his loving grandchildren, Michele and Donovan Haynes, Joshua and Dee Dee Wingfield, Chris and Page Sloan, Karen Conner, Kevin and Katie Sloan Conner; his precious great-grandchildren, Adriana and Eric Haynes, Jacob Wingfield, and Kayla Lugar; sister-in-law, Ruth Likens Sloan Holmes; nephews, Forrest, Sonny, Larry, Chuck; nieces, Sallie, Betty, Doris, Karen, Marie, Florence, and Cathy; numerous great nieces and nephews; and his Good News Baptist Church Family. The family would like to thank the Palliative Care team of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salem and the Good Samaritan Hospice for their loving care. Per Dad's wishes, there will be a visitation at Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Highway, Buchanan on Saturday, September 21, 2013 from 6 to 8 pm, a visitation at Good News Baptist Church, 309 Atherly Street, Roanoke on Sunday, September 22, from 5 to 7 pm then followed by a Celebration of Life service beginning at 7 pm with Rev. Mike Wingfield and Rev. Darren S. Meadows officiating. A graveside service will be held with military honors provided by the Roanoke Valley DAV Honor Guard at 11:00 am on Monday, September 23, 2013 in Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.
