Herbert Jackson Sherertz

Jack (Herbert Jackson) Sherertz, 94, of Matthews, NC died June 28th, 2012 at home. Jack was born December 1, 1917 in Roanoke VA, the oldest son of the late Frank and Mary Sherertz. Jack received his bachelor's degree from Georgia Tech in 1940. After college, Jack entered the Navy V-7 Officer Training Program in October 1940, became an Ensign in February, 1941, and then was assigned to Pearl Harbor on the USS Nevada, where he was present during the December 7th , 1941 attack. He then spent the rest of the war on PT boats - first at Midway (Squadron 1) where he was present during the Japanese attack on June 3-6th, 1942. He finally took part in the D-Day invasion (June 6th, 1944, PT Squadron 34) and the defense of the Channel Islands. Jack finished with a rank of Lt. Commander and was awarded a Bronze Star, British Distinguished Service Cross, French Legion of Honor Medal and a Purple Heart. After the Navy, Jack spent his entire career as a troubleshooter working in the textile industry for American Viscose and FMC Corporation. Jack was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret McCulloch Sherertz, and survived by his second wife, Lillian Sherertz and her family. Jack and Margaret are survived by their family to include : son Robert and wife, Elizabeth Sherertz, daughter Meg and her husband, Michael Pearce, and daughter Susan, and her husband Michael Anthony; five grandchildren including John Howard and his wife, Nicole, Eric Sherertz and his wife Rachel, Betsy Sherertz, Katie Anthony and Ross Anthony; and five great grandchildren: Lilliana, Amelie, Isabella Howard, Ronin and Jax Sherertz; and 14 nieces and nephews. The graveside funeral service will held at Fairview Cemetery in Buchanan, VA on September 15th, 2012 at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to PT Boats, Inc. P.O.
