Rev. Gale Lammey, age 83, of Lakeview Road in Spruce Pine, died Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine. Born on December 4, 1929 in Shelby County, TN; he was the son of the late William Earle and Grace Daniels Lammey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Lammey. Gale played football at Holmes Junior College in Mississippi and graduated there in 1950 and went on to Furman University and played football there as well, was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity and graduated in 1953. He was all conference in football. Following his graduation from Furman, he graduated from Union Seminary in Richmond, VA. His first pastorate was at the Elkon Presbyterian Church in Elkon, VA; he then served at the Oak Forest Presbyterian Church in Enka, NC from 1963 - 1969; then he served at the Greenridge Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, VA from 1969 - 1980; following his service there he served at the First Presbyterian Church in Spruce Pine, NC from 1980 - 1999 where he remained until his retirement from full time service in the ministry. After his retirement, he served as the Interim pastor at the Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church in Avery County, NC. Rev. Lammey was a lifelong honorary member of the Spruce Pine Fire and Rescue Department where he served as Chaplain. He also served as the Chaplain for the Avery-Mitchell and Mountain View Prisons. He gave twenty-two years of dedicated service to W.A.M.Y. Community Action and served as an Officer of the Board of Directors. In 2003, he was recognized as the Board Member of the Year. He was a Recreation Workshop instructor with the Montreat Conference Association and served on the Children's Home Board in Black Mountain, NC. The funeral service for Rev. Gale Lammey will be conducted on Friday, December 21, 2012 at the Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am with the Rev. Wyatt Aiken of Morganton and Rev. Kurt Bomar officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Buchanan, VA at 2:00 pm Saturday, December 22, 2013. The family will receive friends 10:00 am until 11:00 am on Friday morning at the church. Rev. Lammey is survived by his wife; Mary Hirste Lammey of Spruce Pine; his son; Gale Lammey of Black Mountain; his daughters; Sarah Webb and husband, Jim of Fishers, IN and Mary McGregor of Virginia Beach, VA; his grandchildren; Carson Webb of Fishers, IN; Daniel McGregor and Mary Gale McGregor both of Virginia Beach, VA.
