Ellalee "Noonie" Vaughn

August 12, 1927 — February 6, 2018

Ellalee Dodd Vaughn, "Noonie", 90, Delmar, NY, originally from Fincastle, Virginia, died peacefully in her home Tuesday morning, 02/06/18. She had bravely battled Pulmonary Fibrosis for the past year and a half. "Noonie" was preceded in death by her parents, Shelor and Rosalia Dodd, her sisters, Virginia D. Smith and Geneva D. Mateer and her beloved husband of 49 years, Philip E. "Phil" Vaughn. She leaves behind a son, Dale Vaughn, his wife, Geraldine (Gerri) Vaughn of Delmar, NY, a grandson, Alexander D. Vaughn of Turners Falls, MA, a granddaughter, Michele Thompson, her husband, Lars Thompson and great-grandson Quynn Thompson, of Delmar, NY. Noonie also leaves behind her daughter, Teresa (Terry) Vaughn of Green Island, NY as well as three beloved sister-in-laws and many Dodd and Vaughn nieces and nephews. Born and raised in Fincastle, VA during the Great Depression, "Noonie" was a graduate of Fincastle High School and National Business College. For 25 years, during the 50's-mid 70's Noonie and Phil ran a grocery store across from the Botetourt County Court House, where Noonie enjoyed her favorite past-time, visiting with her customers and the "Court House gang," as well as a few regular "loafers" who hung out in the back window seat of the store. Noonie was a lifelong member of the Fincastle United Methodist Church. She was active in local the Garden Club, the PTA and volunteered with the American Cancer Society for many years. She had a heart of gold and became known for her thoughtful "care packages" that she mailed to her grandson in NY and to other friends and family. Noonie and Phil sold the store and moved to Richmond, VA in 1977, where Noonie obtained a job at Continental Insurance Company. While at Continental, Noonie proved that, "you can teach an old dog new tricks" by learning to use the computer, a daunting task at that time. She retired from Continental in 1992. In early 2005 Noonie moved back to Botetourt County, living in Buchanan near her sister, Ginny, who was legally blind. In the fall of 2013, Noonie and Terry moved to upstate NY where Noonie lived in a beautiful apartment in Dale's house, while Terry lives nearby. This move allowed both Dale and Terry to take care of their Mom as her health deteriorated and Noonie became more reclusive. In death, Noonie was able to return to her beloved Fincastle, where she will be buried next to Phil. The family welcomes friends and family to a visitation, to be held on Friday, 02/16/18, from 4-7 p.m. at the Botetourt Funeral Home, Buchanan, VA. The funeral service will be held Saturday, 02/17/18 at 11:00 a.m. at Fincastle United Methodist Church, immediately followed by burial in Godwin Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Noonie's name to Community Hospice of the Capital Region, Albany, NY, to Fincastle United Methodist Church, Fincastle, VA or to Trinity United Methodist Church, Buchanan, VA.
