Edna Mae "Mae" Simpson Sifford, 80, of Mill Creek, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Sifford and granddaughter, Billie Jo Sifford. Mae was a lifelong member of Mill Creek Baptist Church. She had been a member of the choir, substitute organist, member of many committees, a teacher in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and went on several mission trips for the church, including a trip to Africa. She is survived by her children, Debra K. Sifford, Lewis P. Sifford, and Sally S. Wheeler; and grandchildren, James L. Sifford and Steven Smith. She is also survived by her sister, Joan Reynolds of Kingsport, TN and her children, and grandchildren. She was also fortunate to have many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mae taught home economics in Botetourt County for more than 38 years. She was supportive of all kinds of extracurricular activities as well. She was class sponsor, cheerleading sponsor, chaperoned proms, dances, and school trips. She rarely forgot a student she taught. She didn't slow down when she retired. She was a member and former officer of Botetourt Retired Teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma, Eastern Star, and a former volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Brian Center. At her request, there will be no public services, but the family will receive friends from 3 to 6pm on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at Mae's home in Mill Creek (11570 Lee Highway, Fincastle). In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Mill Creek Baptist Church Building Fund at 11475 Lee Hwy, Fincastle, VA 24090. The family offers a special thank you to the nurses at the intensive care units and the Palliative Care Staff at Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for their excellent care they gave to Mae during her weeks there.
