Edgar Caldwell Mayse

MAYSE Edgar Caldwell Edgar Caldwell Mayse, 82, of Fincastle, passed away Friday, March 2, 2018. He was born in Concord, NC, on June 27, 1935, and graduated from high school in Lynchburg, Va in 1957. Attended Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia from 1953-57, where he graduated magna cum laude. Graduated from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, in 1960, with a Master of Divinity degree cum laude. Was ordained to the ministry of the Presbyterian Church, U.S. in 1960, where he has served with distinction in that vocation for the past 58 years, being the installed pastor of Presbyterian congregations in Fincastle, VA, Onancock, VA, Walterboro, SC, Fairhope, AL, Churchville, MD, and a second time pastorate in Fincastle, VA. He returned to Union Seminary in Richmond from 1969-1974, for post-graduate studies that resulted in a Master of Theology degree in 1970 and a Doctor of Theology degree in 1974, with specialization in American Church History. He authored numerous articles that were published in the American Journal of Presbyterian History, and in 1993 Dr. Mayse co-edited "The History of the Household of Faith," a series of essays honoring his theological mentor, Dr. James H. Smylie. During his retirement years of residence in Fincastle, Dr. Mayse twice returned to Hampden-Sydney College to serve as the interim church pastor/college chaplain, 2003-04 and again in 2009. His Memorial Service will be held at the Fincastle Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 12 Noon, with subsequent burial in the Hampden-Sydney College Presbyterian Church cemetery at a later date.
