CARSON, Dorothy B. of Buchanan, passed away on November 19, 2023. Born in 1929, she was the loving wife of the late John Stull Carson, the mother of the late John Stull Carson, Jr., and the daughter of the late John W. and Eunice B. Barger. She was also preceded in death by her brother Walter B. Barger, her niece Brenda Barger, her brother-in-law James B. Way, Sr., and her nephew James B. Way, Jr. She is survived by her son David A. Carson of Naples, FL; her sister Susan B. Way of Roanoke, VA; her brother-in-law Clay and his wife Jean Carson of Radford, VA; her niece M. Susan Way of Buchanan, VA; her nephew Bryan Barger of Germantown, TN; her cousin Bonnie Crockett of Roanoke, VA; and numerous other loving relatives and close friends. At the time of her death, Mrs. Carson resided at the Woodland Hills retirement community in Roanoke, VA. Mrs. Carson grew up in, and spent the
overwhelming majority of her life in, Buchanan, VA, where she was a vibrant part of the community and fondly known by her nickname Dot. She graduated from Buchanan High School in 1947. In 1951, she graduated from James Madison University where she was a member of the Theta Sigma Upsilon Sorority. In 1995, she retired from the Virginia School System after a 36-year teaching career. She began her teaching career in Richmond, VA, and also taught at Buchanan High School. However, she spent the majority of her career teaching third grade at the Buchanan Elementary School. She positively affected the lives of numerous students across several generations, many of whom remained close friends throughout her life. She loved the town of Buchanan and was always ready and willing to be involved in community affairs. She served in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Buchanan Volunteer Rescue Squad, and she was an active part of the Fairview Cemetery Association. She was a member of the Buchanan Presbyterian Church. Services will be held on Friday, November 24 at 11:00 a.m. at the Buchanan Presbyterian Church, with the Reverend Donna Britt and the Reverend Marina Gopadze officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Buchanan. A reception will be held at the Buchanan Presbyterian
