On January 31, 1976, David Cook was born a fighter with a stubborn streak and an irreverent sense of humor. These were qualities that he carried throughout his life. He fought until the end, not out of fear of his own mortality, but rather because he didn’t want to leave behind the people that he loved. There were so many qualities that defined David as a person. He was a family man, an intellectual, a lover of nature, and an upstanding citizen.
David leaves behind his beloved family to mourn in sorrow and rejoice in the years that they spent with him. David is survived by his wife (Alicia Diane Meador), four children (Hannah, Jakob, Emerson, and Elliott), parents (Larry and Allison Cook), brother (Christopher), nephew (Lleyton) grandson (Christian), and numerous other relatives.
Academia was a passion for David. He taught English and literature at Radford University. Prior to teaching, he graduated Summa Cum Laude from Radford University with a BA in English Studies as well as a MA in Literature. During his quest for knowledge, he received many scholarships and accolades. He furthered his education at Hollins University, receiving a MFA from its prestigious Creative Writing program, in which he specialized in poetry.
In addition to his many academic pursuits, David liked spending time outdoors. He enjoyed vacationing with his family, hiking, and cookouts. He had a passion for tennis, and nothing brought him more joy than teaching the game to his children.
David was a realist who concerned himself with the plight of the common citizen. He understood economics and had a special knack for explaining complex subjects in simplistic terms. He was quiet by nature, but he was charismatic. He could have been a politician, although he had a penchant for the truth.
As he ascends the immortal staircase, we are left, during these long summer days, to contemplate... Why? One thought prevails. Although you are no longer with us, we will hold you in our hearts forever. David, you enriched our lives, made us all better people, and made the world a brighter place.
