He worked his way through the ranks of the highway and heavy construction division, filling many positions within the company, until being named Executive Vice President in 1971 and President in 1982. Following retirement, he and Mary Alice became “Snow Birds,” wintering in Bonita Springs, Florida and maintaining a summer home in Roanoke.

At a young age Curtis became a fly-fishing enthusiast. Throughout his life he built his reputation as an avid fly-fisherman, perfecting the sport, down to the art of tying his own flies. His love of fly-fishing and traveling, took him and Mary Alice to many parts of the world. He had a standing fly-fishing excursion every February in New Zealand.
