Bernard Deacon passed away in his home on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at the age of 74. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was born March 16, 1943 in Lexington, VA to Erman and Martha Deacon and grew up in Buchanan, VA. He was the youngest of 10 brothers and the only one born in a hospital. Bernard was a member of the United States Army with Honorable Service from 1962 to 1965. During that time, he served his country in Korea. Bernard married the love of his life, Nancy Stinnett, on June 25, 1966. They moved to Vinton, VA in 1969 where they raised their beautiful family, a son (Tommy) and daughter (Nyokia) and four cherished grandchildren. Bernard was a machinist at Ingersoll-Rand from 1967 to 1984. In 1984, he started his own business, Able Security Services, where he remained until his retirement. For many years, he attended 17th Street Baptist Church where he was a deacon. Bernard was a jack of all trades who could fix almost anything. Whenever a car was broken down, Bernard was the first call people made. His family and friends would bring many broken toys or gadgets or electronics to his house. He would piddle around with most any item, often with his brother BD's help, and would get them back in working order. Bernard loved motorcycles, Richard Petty, and the NY Yankees. He died of cancer in the family home in Vinton surrounded by those who loved him dearly. Bernard is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Nancy Deacon; son, Tommy Worley; daughter, Nyokia Bowman; son-in-law, Bob Bowman; grandchildren, Tyler Worley, Megan Worley, Kirstyn Bowman, and Ashton Bowman; brothers and sister-in-law, Boyd "BD" (Laura) Deacon, Bolivar (Darlene) Deacon, and Mary Jo Deacon; 8 nephews and 7 nieces; special friend and cousin, Larry Deacon; special friends, Clayton Gray and Joe Majerczyk; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Clarence (Linda) Stinnett, Tony (Sandra) Stinnett, and Mike Cox. He was preceded in death by his parents and 7 brothers: Everette, Warren "Scott", Kenneth, Hunter "Bruce", Douglas "Carlyle", Clarence, and Curtis. Visitation will be 6-8pm Monday, October 9, 2017 in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 1pm Tuesday, October 10, 2017 also in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with Pastor Michael DuVal officiating.
