GRIFFITH Bennie Harold Bennie "Buck" Harold Griffith, 84, of Fincastle, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2014. A member of Fincastle Baptist Church and the Fincastle Masonic Lodge 342, he was a Civil Service instructor and an Army Veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Griffith was in the mining business in Southwest Virginia from 1954-1959 and a 1959 graduate from Virginia Tech. His work with Botetourt County Schools began in 1959 as a teacher at James River High. From 1961-1991, he served as assistant superintendent for Botetourt County Public Schools. He also served on the Board of Supervisors for the Fincastle District. Many remember Ben as an avid golfer, a hunting/fishing enthusiast, and part time farmer. Later in life, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and working on projects in his wood working shop. Preceded in death by his parents, Rita Viola Bandy and Emory Lee Griffith; he is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Shirley Mosley Griffith; daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Leon Turner, Jr; Teresa and Phillip Simmons, all of Fincastle; grandchildren, Noel Turner, Creek Turner, Olivia Simmons and Ainsley Simmons; and sister, Louise Vance of Chester, VA. Informal visitation can be made at the home of Shirley Griffith in the days preceding the service. A graveside service will be held Friday, June 13 at 2 PM at Godwin Cemetery with Weldon Martin and Doug Ross officiating.
