Arnie Ray Hartberger, 74, of Buchanan, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 9, 2010 at his home with his loved ones at his side. Ray was honored to be a Korean veteran and to participate in the Berlin Airlift while serving in the US Army. After service, he worked for N & W Railroad before working in construction where he was known for his craftsmanship in carpentry. He retired from his A & R Greenhouse business in 2005 due to his declining health. He loved to spend time with his family and friends reminiscing. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and camping. He always looked forward to his yearly trips with the Botetourt/Roanoke Farm Tours, but his best rip ever was his final journey home to be with his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Ray was born on May 22, 1936 in Roanoke. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irvin and Fanny Callahan Hartberger; his son, Jeffery Ray Hartberger; and his grandson, Corey Beckner. Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Alice Petty Beckner Hartberger; sons, Thomas Hartberger of Roanoke, Gary Hartberger of Lexington, KY, Victor Beckner of Salem, Phillip Beckner of Blue Ridge, and Randy (Cheryl) Beckner of Blue Ridge; daughters, Gail (Tom) Throckmorton of Florida, Jan (Randy) Frazier of Salem, and Rhonda Tlockowski of Buchanan; special grandchildren, Jeffrey Hartberger, Justin Hartberger, Stacy Treadwell, Mandy, Erik, and Raelee Carter, Joshua and Caleb Beckner, Brandon Beckner, John and Joe Frazier, James Frazier, Whitney and Adam Puckett; five great grandchildren; brother, Albert (Ruth) Hartberger of Vinton, Robert (Mildred) Hartberger of Montvale; sister, Doris (Ralph) Lovern of Montvale; special brother-in-law, John (Elizabeth) Petty of Buchanan; special sisters-in-law, Joyce Thrasher of Buchanan, Mary Deacon of Salem, Ella Williamson of Fincastle, Rossie (Jim) Willis of Buchanan, and Rose Petty of Greenville, SC; special friends, Mert Whiting, Al Hillman. Don Bohon, David Harris, and Diane Cleaveland. The family would like to give a special thank-you to Dr. Frank Biscardi for his extra time and loving care he has given us, and to Dr. Daniel Jones and his staff at Daleville Family Practice. Flowers are a lovely memorial, however, if you prefer, contributions may be made to the Buchanan or Troutville Rescue Squads or the Building Fund of Buchanan Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm. Sunday, September 12, 2010 in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Woody Officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Buchanan. The family will receive friends Saturday (9/11) from 5 to 8 pm at Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Highway, Buchanan (254-3000)
